SDCU Open One Year

by Wintringham Communications

Twelve months ago Wintringham opened its very own purpose-built Specialist Dementia Care Unit, located at our McLean Lodge site in Flemington.

This came after Wintringham was chosen by the Australian Government's ‘Specialist Dementia Care Program’ (SDCP), to build a home that is specifically designed for people living with more severe stages of dementia. The program provides a person-centred, multidisciplinary approach to care for people with severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, whose behaviours may put themselves or others at risk, or otherwise mean they are unable to be appropriately cared for by mainstream aged care services.

This home offers transitional care which aims to reduce or stabilise the symptoms of dementia and enable people to move to less intensive care accommodation. The average length of stay is around one year.

The homes have been architecturally designed to support people within a dementia friendly environment. It can accommodate six people including bedrooms with private ensuite, a kitchen, living area and office space. Dedicated additional staff have been employed to service the needs of our new residents.

“We’re excited to see this investment in supporting marginalised people, who are in great need of specialist support which will allow them to live comfortably and with dignity,” said Bryan Lipmann AM, CEO / Founder of Wintringham.
