Four years after opening its doors, Wintringham’s Audrey Rainsford Supportive Housing in Carlton continues to demonstrate the impact of combining permanent housing with integrated support for older people who have experienced homelessness.
A recent evaluation found the supportive housing program has delivered strong outcomes in housing stability, wellbeing and social connection, helping residents build safer, more secure and independent lives.
Since opening in 2022, the 60-apartment development has supported 75 residents, many of whom had previously experienced long periods of homelessness, insecure housing and social isolation.
One of the evaluation's strongest findings was the transformative impact of secure housing. Residents consistently described moving into Audrey Rainsford as a turning point in their lives, enabling them to move from crisis and uncertainty to stability and recovery.
David Nilsson, Head of Practice – Social Support at Wintringham said, “The evaluation found residents reported improvements in mental health, physical health, independence and overall quality of life. Benefits were particularly evident among residents who had lived at Audrey Rainsford for more than two years, highlighting the value of long-term, relationship-based support.”
“A key strength of the model is its integrated approach, bringing together housing support, tenancy management, therapeutic recreation, security and maintenance services. This allows staff to respond to both housing needs and the complex health and social challenges many residents face.”
“Therapeutic recreation activities, including outings, meals, arts programs and community events, were also identified as an important contributor to wellbeing, helping residents build friendships, reduce social isolation and strengthen connections to their community.
“One of the most significant outcomes, was the program's 96 per cent housing sustainment rate, with only three tenancy breakdowns recorded since opening. These outcomes demonstrate that older people with complex histories of homelessness really can successfully maintain stable housing when provided with the right support.”
The evaluation concluded that Audrey Rainsford is a highly successful supportive housing model, delivering lasting improvements in wellbeing, social connection and quality of life, while helping residents sustain long-term housing.
